What does it mean that CHEC is a non profit?
Because CHEC is a non-profit volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) we have a Board of Directors that meets every three months. The board is responsible for setting or changing CHEC’s mission, strategy, and goals, and ensuring that the organization operates in compliance with legal and ethical standards. Directors of the board (unless they are also officers) do not receive discounts or other compensation. For a current list of board members, or if you are interested in attending a board meeting or becoming a part of the board, please email [email protected].
How is the day broken up?
Typically our Monday classes follow this schedule, but some classes are adjusted to run slightly shorter for our younger students and would be noted on the registration page! *BLOCK 1 (9:45am - 11am) *BLOCK 2 (11:10am - 12:25pm) *LUNCH (12:25pm - 1pm) *BLOCK 3 (1pm - 2:15pm) *BLOCK 4 (2:25pm - 3:40pm)
Who can come to CHEC?
Any child between the ages of 5 and their High School graduation can take classes at CHEC. CHEC is very accepting of diverse learning styles and differences, including ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and gifted learners. Small class sizes, flexible teachers and the a-la-carte nature of our program allows careful pairing of students with appropriate classes and supports student success across many learning styles. If your child would benefit from accommodations, please contact us at [email protected] prior to registering. Availability of accommodations will vary depending on the class and the teacher, but we are open to discussing options with parents. Please note that CHEC is not equipped to handle students with behavior issues. We require that students are able to follow instructions and respect teachers and other students.
What is Supervised Stay?
If your child is at least 5 years old, you may choose to stay onsite or drop your child off during CHEC classes. However, all children between the ages of 5 and 12 must be enrolled in either a class or in Supervised Stay in order to remain onsite without parental supervision. For children under the age of 5 (or for children who are less independent), parents are required to stay onsite in order to be available for their children. Children must be fully able to handle their own bathroom needs in order to be left without parental supervision at CHEC. Supervised Stay will run in our dedicated lounge space and/or the playground and is supervised by volunteers.
Please note the following policies:
Students may not register for more Supervised Stay sessions than classes.
Supervised Stay is not offered before 9:45am or after 3:40pm.
Discounts and scholarships do not apply to Supervised Stay sessions.
If a class is canceled for the day, students may participate in Supervised Stay for that class period without charge
Do teens need to be in Supervised Stay?
Teens ages 12 and up are permitted to stay on site without enrolling in or paying for Supervised Stay. This means that your teen will be free to go off-site without notifying anyone at CHEC and will not be confined to the playground and lounge area. We leave it up to your discretion to determine whether your teen is mature enough to be able to be left at CHEC unsupervised. However, if we feel that your child is demonstrating that they need supervision, then we reserve the right to require them to be enrolled in Supervised Stay.
How do I know my child will be accounted for at each class?
Please sign your child(ren) in and out of CHEC. The sign-in sheet can be found at the check-in table with our site managers. If you will be picking your child up late, please notify our site supervisors at [email protected] or text or call the following numbers:
Cara Leigh Williams (703) 582-1286
Melissa Kirkpatrick (970) 509-5799
General CHEC phone number (434) 326-1772 (if you cannot reach Cara Leigh or Melissa )
Teachers also take attendance during each block and notify the site supervisors of any absences. Those are then verified with the main sign in sheet.
I see theres a lunch block, how does that work?
There is no sign-up and no fee for students who stay onsite for lunch. You are welcome to join your child for lunch, but are not required to be in attendance. While we will have site managers on duty during lunch, their primary role is to supervise safe play on the premises. Refrigerator space for lunches is available.
We do not have the resources to ensure that our facilities are allergy-friendly. We ask that you encourage your children to wash their hands, clean up after themselves, and be aware that others may have an allergy to what they are eating.
What happens if my child's class gets cancelled?
In the event that a teacher needs to cancel a class, parents will be notified by email and an announcement will be posted on the homepage of our website, and the class missed will be moved to the first make up day. (please check your email every Monday morning before heading to class). Students are welcome to attend Supervised Stay at no charge if a teacher cancels a class. If the teacher cannot attend the makeup day, parents will be refunded for the missed class.
