Description

Murder mystery solving with role play

In this class students will be playing the roles of suspects in our weekly murder mysteries. One week you may be cast as a suspicious cyclist from Barcelona and the next, a medieval blacksmith with a bad attitude. You may play the role of a lead singer from Nashville with a grudge or a shifty-eyed soda shop waitress. No need to memorize lines since students will be either improvising from dossiers or reading from scripts. The majority of class time will be spent getting to know suspects through role play and revealing evidence. Students will have the opportunity to analyze clues and make inferences each week before making their claim as to who committed the murder in question. You may even have to accuse yourself!

Students should be comfortable reading a character packet and assuming the personality a character during class. Mysteries will prompt characters to share and discover certain information throughout class but will not require reading directly from a script.

Note that while I will be using teen-friendly mysteries, the central theme will be murder and some mysteries may contain slightly more mature themes.

General CHEC class dates are listed separately on this page. Please reference the following modifications to that schedule for this class only: We will not hold class on Monday May 5th. Will use the makeup day on May 19th.

Instructor: Susan Maccarelli

I am a parent of two CHEC teens and have enjoyed teaching classes since we started at CHEC in 2022. I have offered many board and card gaming classes as well as diamond art and an 'all about me' class. When I am not teaching classes at CHEC, I am filling the roles of CHEC Registrar and playing with Dessa, our mini schnoodle pup. I have a Masters degree in Education from JMU, and figure that if I am too old to take all of these great CHEC classes myself, at least I can teach some!
